The JAL Promotion That Just Won’t Die

JAL Discount Mileage Promotion

I first came across a post about a JAL 5,000 mile discount on Angelina Travels back in April of 2015 and made a mental note that the next time I wanted to fly Bangkok Airways this was a pretty solid option. The fact that many of these awards were discounted by 50 – 66% caught my attention and while I had intended to do a post about it then, it got lost in my drafts pile.

JAL Mileage Promotion Eligible Boarding Period

While doing a bit of spring cleaning I came across the post and gave the link a click, expecting to find a dead link or an apology about how the promotion had ended. Instead I was pleasantly surprised to find that this promotion is working its way towards immortality. It started in November of 2012 and was set to expire March 31st, 2016 when I came across it initially. It seems that they have extended the booking period until September 30th, 2017.

The only change that they seem to have made to this promotion is that they raised the price on the 1,001 to 2,000 mile band by 2,000 JAL miles. While that hardly makes me jump for joy, it’s not really a huge loss.

Now let’s be honest, the 3,000 mile discount on the 2,001 – 4,000 mile band isn’t worth talking about. So I’ll focus on the 1 – 1,000 and 1,001 – 2,000 mile bands that are discounted 66% and 50%, respectively.

As you can see there are a lot of popular destinations within those two bands. Within the 1,000 mile band you can get to basically every destination in Thailand as well as Angkor Watt (Siem Reap) and Phnom Penh in Cambodia and Vientiane, Laos. Within the 1,001 – 2,000 mile band you add in the rest of Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam and even Singapore.

Bangkok Airways Destinations From Bangkok

The ability to go from Bangkok to many of the most visited destinations in South East Asia for between 5,000 and 10,000 JAL miles is a pretty sweet deal. They do pass on fuel surcharges (boo!!!), so expect to pay between $12 and $80 in fuel surcharges plus applicable taxes and fees.

JAL Discount Mileage Promotion Terms

The terms and conditions state that you need to complete your travel by September 30th, 2017, though it seems like they keep on extending this promotion, but I wouldn’t count on that. You must book by 12:00 PM two days prior to departure to use this promotion and you can call their International Award Reservation Desk at 0570-025-103 or 03-5460-3737.

You can sign up for a JAL Mileage Bank account here and they are a transfer partner of Starwood Preferred Guest. Here is a link for transferring your Starpoints to Air miles. Remember that for each 20,000 Starpoints you transfer you get a 5:000 mile bonus. Which means that for 20,000 Starpoints you could book up to 5 round-trip tickets with this promotion. Not too shabby.

This is definitely a really solid deal and a sweet spot that I intend to use for my upcoming travels in the region. As long as they keep renewing this promotion it represents one of the most economical choices for using miles to travel within the region.
